About The Wine
The emergence of blended, savoury and textural whites is such a great thing for Australian wine. Embracing new (and old) varieties. Making the best parts of them sing. Bring it on.
This is a four-way blend of Fiano and Pinot Grigio from the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley Garganega and Riverland Bianco d’Alessano.
The point of this wine is simple, “to deliver a vibrant yet soft and textural wine”, and the point was certainly achieved.
Campbell Mattinson said, “It’s textural but not in the normal way… In short though, it just works.” in his 91 point review. It’s one of those ‘greater than the sum of its parts’ wines, and will perfectly suit a variety of occasions, particularly the next time you find yourself at a nice little Italian BYO.
What It Tastes Like
“It’s textural but not in the normal way. Its slinky and soft but dry and chalky; it pushes and pulls, eases and then tenses. It tastes of grapefruit and assorted stonefruit, perhaps some spice, definitely some citrus. In short though, it just works.” - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

WINEMAKER’S NOTES A blend of Pinot Grigio, Fiano, Garganega and Bianco d’Alessano = aromatic and textural.
Pinot Grigio (37%) - Glendeahl, Ashwood and Maple Ridge Vineyards, Lobethal, Woodside and Hahndorf Fiano (33%) - Amadio Vineyard, Kersbrook, Adelaide Hills Garganega (18%) - Day Vineyard, Mt Crawford, Barossa Valley Bianco d’Alessano (12%) - Ricca Terra Farms, Barmera, Riverland
The grape varieties are well matched to their individual vineyards, cool for Pinot Grigio and warm for the rest, fermented separately and blended prior to bottling, mingle to deliver a vibrant yet soft and textural wine.
Not only do the varieties each lend their varietal charm to this blend - Grigio has the zip, Fiano the texture, Garganega’s lemons and minerals and the soft medium melon fruits of Bianco d’Alessano - but there is also a bit of artifact tasted here too. The hand-picked Grigio and Fiano were made in bright, tank fermented styles, the machine harvested Garganega had full solids fermentation and the hand-picked Bianco d’Alessano crushed to the press for some skin contact. All to chase a fascinating and delicious blend.
