About The Wine
When asked if he could make a “less expensive, everyday drinking wine”, Duane Coates didn’t find some cheap bulk wine he could slap a label on; the Coates philosophy of utilising “first class vineyard sites… careful winemaking and… premium quality oak” would not allow that. This is a winemaker with a commitment to the integrity of his label.
The Petite Rouge (Little Red) is made from the pressings of his Adelaide Hills and Langhorne Creek Syrah blocks. There is no declassification here, this is not the leftover fruit from the vintage. This a portion of his best of the best fruit matured in old oak for 12 months, unfined and unfiltered. At under $20, this is a flat out bargain.
The Langhorne Creek fruit provides the gravity, the weight and the voluptuousnesses that SA Shiraz/Syrah is famous for while the portion from the Adelaide Hills gives the wine a freshness and a perfume that is rarely found in wines this price.
If you have tried any of Duane’s wines before, you will know that they always punch well above their weight. The Petite Rouge is no different and is the perfect introduction to the Coates house style; wines with class and an almost European elegance but with an undeniable Australian sensibility.
What It Tastes Like

The Coates range is made without compromise; first class vineyard sites made with careful winemaking and use of premium quality oak. Making wines with this level of attention to detail does, however, come at a cost. We have been asked by customers and the wine trade if we could make a less expensive, everyday drinking wine and we have worked on ways of keeping costs down.
La Petite Rouge 2015 is the first release of our new Syrah (Shiraz) based affordable wine. We have started with good vineyard sites, but kept down costs by not using new oak, utilizing less expensive glass for our bottles and maintaining a 12 month barrel maturation regime. The base wine uses Langhorne Creek Syrah (2/3) and Adelaide Hills pressings (1/3)
Fermentation using natural yeast proceeded over a three week period in open fermenters. Pressing was conducted using a small ½ tonne Mori basket press that gives a great flavour and soft tannin profile. Maturation in used French barriques provides a hint of savoury oak character whilst allowing the fruit characters to be expressed unhindered. A single racking and regular topping are the only time the wine is disturbed post malo with 12 months spent in wood. Bottling date is determined when the tannin and oak balance feel right, with a further 3 months spent in bottle prior to release. The traditional approach used to make La Petite Rouge precludes the use of the additives and fining agents such as tannins, enzymes, egg, fish or milk products. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in February of 2016.
