About The Wine
Miette (pronounced ‘mee-yet’) is the entry level label of Spinifex - one of the country’s most loved cult producers and one of the leading poster boys of the ‘new Barossa’.
The wines of Peter Schell and Magali Gely are consistently authentic, characterful and oozing class and quality. They are based on the eclectic blends of the Southern Rhone Valley, and when it comes to these wines in our opinion no one outshines Spinifex.
James Halliday agrees, declaring that in his opinion ,“Spinifex out-Torbrecks Torbreck.”
This 2014 Shiraz is right on the money and it is loaded with flavour. Year on year, Peter Schells wines gain more recognition, and this epicly good $22 Shiraz is going to win him even more fans. We think this is the best release so far.
A beautiful wine at a great price, and a wonderful example of elegant and savoury Barossa Shiraz.
What It Tastes Like
Licorice root, blackberrys, plums and black coffee. Rich juice but with pinpoint tannin, the wine feels soft and well woven together. It has density without being heavy. Really impressive at this pricepoint.
91 points. “Excellent bright crimson-purple hue; Barossa Valley shiraz can be elegant and full of delicious fun, drawing you in with persuasion, not coercion. It has red cherry and spiced plum flavours suggesting a cooler climate than most of the valley, yet doesn’t disown its birthright.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Spinifex’s second label has never been in better form, and this release of the 2014 Shiraz comes off the back of rave reviews for the ‘13. The core of the Miette Shiraz is sourced from four key vineyards in Ebenezer, Bethany, Tanunda and the Moppa; site that deliver bold, honest, deep Shiraz flavours and structure. Weaving in freshness and length, Schell leavens the valley floor wines with leaner fruit from the higher country of the Barossa Ranges and Eden Valley. Hand harvested fruit is fermented with indigenous yeasts with a portion retained as whole bunches. Elevage is undertaken in a range of differing French oak vessels of 225 to 3000-litres capacity and a portion retained in stainless steel. Bottled 18 months after vintage. It’s a great-value, righteous brew deep in flavour, texture and personality.

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.
Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
