A McLaren Vale producer’s range would not be complete without a Shiraz, and Brad Hickey’s (AKA Brash Higgins) does not disappoint.
The fruit for his ‘SHZ’ was hand selected from the Omensetter vineyard in the Vale, a vineyard renowned for producing a distinctively savoury style of Shiraz. The fruit was basket pressed into French Hogsheads for 12 months and aged for a further 12 months in bottle before being unleashed onto the world.
2013 in McLaren Vale lent itself to making powerful and spicy styles of Shiraz, a vintage that played right into Brad’s hands. A wine of balance, finesse and sheer class, this is exactly what we have come to expect from this up and coming icon of the area.
With only 295 cases produced and the previous vintage picking up 95 points from James Halliday, this will sell out fast so get in while you can, you will be thrilled by every single glass!
What It Tastes Like
A more savoury and refined style for McLaren Vale Shiraz. There is the succulent black fruits and blood plums often found around these parts but the distinctive black olive and herbal characters add another level to its interest. The fine, savoury tannins sit well in the mouth coated by juicy yet restrained fruit. There is spice and meat and berries and a whole lot going on but it’s never noisy, it’s just enjoyable. First rate Shiraz.
2012 vintage - 95 points “Hand-picked, basket-pressed, matured for 12 months in French hogsheads. Full purple-crimson, it has generosity built in to the tips of its toes; blackberry and a wrap of licorice and bitter chocolate are given further sustenance by ripe tannins and subtle oak; the length is a given once all the other boxes are as well ticked as here.”

Made from 16 year old shiraz vines grown at the Omensetter Vineyard. Vinted from hand selected fruit, the grapes were destemmed and sent to open fermenters for 4 weeks then basket pressed and matured for one year in fine 1-4 year old French hogsheads and aged just over a year in bottle. 2013 in the Vale is considered a warm vintage; bolder wines with power and spice.
‘Blood plum in hue, the nose of the Brash 13 SHZ has black plums, chorizo, blood orange zest, spicy paprika, nutmeg and liquorice, and a sweet earthy note that is typical of Omensetter Vineyard’s red clay. Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking ‘yank’ Brad Hickey. With a background as one of America’s top sommeliers, Hickey came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much-loved Omensetter vineyard. Wildly original and top quality stuff!

Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework.
