About The Wine
Amato Vino is a groovy up and coming winery set in Margaret River. In a region steeped in tradition, it is heartening to see such innovation in winemaking and varietal selection in the area (see Marq wines also).
Winemaker Mark Wehr’s Nebbiolo is a good drink. He’s cunningly managed to capture all the distinctive ‘Neb’ character whilst maintaining a ‘new world’ drinkability. It’s ripe, juicy and food-friendly with plenty of structure and fruit.
If you have never tried a Nebbiolo this is a user friendly premium example. The perfect wine to open up your Nebbiolo world.
What It Tastes Like
Nebbiolo all over. Red berries and cherry with tarry notes and some flowers. There is a soft truffle character which is beautifully poised in the mix and touch of musk and herbals for good measure. Tannin that grips the whole mouth and acid to carry the sour cherry and spicy palate. Finishes clean.
The greatest grape? Some say so, especially the Italians from north-west Italy (Piedmonte to be precise).
Bright ruby/cherry red colour. Spice and florals – violets, sweet/savoury herbs – lead to earth, game and some truffle. Also shows tarry blackberry and redfruits cherry and rhubarb, licorice and a slight smoky hint.
The palate is medium-bodied, warm and generous. Spicy redfruits abound – cherry, rhubarb, some prune and blackcurrant. Eastern spices of clove and cardamom round it out. These crunchy fruit flavours and textures lead to the classic crunchy acid/tannin flesh‐out on the back palate. An Italian classic wine style, firmly structured, yet approachable in its youth. Best enjoyed with food. 21% whole bunch ferment, on skins for 29 days. Matured in aged French oak for 16 months, unfined & unfiltered. Only 103 dozen made from a single vineyard site near Yallingup.

Brad Wehr’s Amato Vino label is equal parts traditional and experimental. His Wine By Brad and Mantra labels exemplify the best of classic Margaret River varieties while the Amato Vino label showcases some of the most exciting experimental wines in the country. From innovative winemaking techniques and emerging varieties the eclectic and innovative, Amato Vino is a name to watch in the West.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s truly great wine grapes. Most famously produced in the Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, this king-pin of varieties is making a surge on Australian soil. A notoriously late ripening variety, Australian producers are constantly refining the way they grow this grape. Nebbiolo wines are light to medium bodied with incredible internal power and structure. These wines can live for decades when grown on the right sites. The classic descriptors of ‘tar & roses’ are often applied to this variety but the scope for complexity and nuance in the best versions is virtually limitless. The life of a great Nebbiolo as it matures through the years is one of the great wonders in all of wine.
